Shift register instructions include SFTR (bit right shift), SFTL (bit left shift), WSFR (word right shift), WSFL (word left shift), SFWR (shift write), and SFRD (shift read). In this article, we will focus on two of the most commonly used instructions: SFTR (bit right shift) and SFTL (bit left shift).

The SFTR instruction is coded as FNC34, while the SFTL instruction is coded as FNC35. Both instructions can be applied to operands such as X, Y, M, and S. The target operand [D·] specifies the length of the operating element, and the source operand [S·] determines the number of bits to shift (n2) and the length of the source (n1). It is important to note that n2 must be less than or equal to n1, which should not exceed 1024. These instructions allow for shifting of bit elements by a specified number of positions—either to the right or left.

For example, in Figure 14-1, when X11 transitions from OFF to ON, the system performs a right shift as illustrated in Figure 14-2. Similarly, in Figure 14-3, when X12 turns ON, a left shift occurs, as shown in Figure 14-4. These operations are essential in various automation and control systems where data needs to be manipulated efficiently within registers.
