This article presents a real-world application of fieldbus technology combined with Ethernet, showcasing how fieldbus can be effectively used to access field data at the site management level. In this case, the lower layer uses the PROFIBUS-DP protocol to collect data from field instruments via an industrial computer. On the upper layer, the TCP/IP protocol is implemented, allowing the industrial computer to communicate and exchange real-time data with the management computer. This setup streamlines data flow and improves system efficiency.
1. System Characteristics The system operates in a bus mode, which is ideal for scattered collection points across different process workshops in a production line. Using a bus-based architecture allows for distributed I/O, significantly reducing cabling and making installation and maintenance easier. The industrial computer monitors the instantaneous values of energy consumption and calculates cumulative totals using dedicated software. These totals are then periodically sent to the upper management system. The system supports cross-platform communication, as the industrial computer runs on Windows 2000 with Think&Do monitoring software, while the upper system uses Unix. Data is transmitted via TCP/IP, enabling seamless integration between platforms.
