2017 ACM Fellow list: set a record of Chinese selection

On December 11, 2017, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) announced its list of 54 new Fellows. These individuals were recognized for their groundbreaking contributions in areas such as database theory, design automation, information retrieval, multimedia computing, and network security.

The newly elected Fellows come from a variety of countries, including Canada, China, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Their research spans across key fields like artificial intelligence, big data, computer architecture, computer graphics, high-performance computing, human-computer interaction, sensor networks, and wireless networks.

Among them, eight Chinese researchers—such as Yang Qiang, Zhai Yong, and Ma Yi—were honored, marking a record number of Chinese scholars selected in a single year. This achievement highlights the growing influence of Chinese scientists on the global stage of computing and technology.

Vicki L. Hanson, President of ACM, stated that being named an ACM Fellow is one of the highest honors in the field of computing. Only less than 1% of ACM members are awarded this title. She emphasized that these individuals have made iconic contributions to the advancement of computing, driving innovation and improving people’s lives in countless ways. The work of the 2017 Fellows has not only advanced science but also had a significant impact on society and the global economy.

Additionally, the ACM announced that the annual award dinner will take place in San Francisco on June 23, 2018, where the new Fellows will be celebrated for their achievements.
