Hong Kong plans to phase out tungsten light bulbs in stages and publicly solicit public comments

[High-tech LED News] Recently, the Hong Kong government announced plans to restrict the sale of tungsten filament bulbs in stages. In the first phase, it is prohibited to supply tungsten bulbs of 25 watts or more that do not meet the minimum energy performance standards, but does not include quartz lamps. A three-month public consultation will be launched for this purpose, ending on November 11.

It is understood that the first phase of the ban on sales of 25 watts or more of non-reflective tungsten light bulbs, including general lighting bulbs, candle-shaped, fancy round and other decorative bulbs, but does not include tungsten halogen bulbs.

The Hong Kong government proposes to ban the supply of light bulbs that fail to meet minimum energy performance standards and to use the registration system to manage the supply of tungsten light bulbs that meet minimum energy performance standards.

At the same time, the government also proposes to set a suitable minimum energy performance standard for the recommended tungsten filament bulbs with reference to foreign mandatory schemes.

At present, tungsten lamps have been implemented or planned to be phased out in many countries and regions around the world. Non-reflective tungsten filament bulbs are generally replaced with more energy efficient bulbs in terms of alternative supply. Such as æ‚ electric iron, LED lights, etc.

According to Chen Fan, deputy director of the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department of Hong Kong, the electricity consumption in Hong Kong has accounted for an average of 15% of the total electricity consumption in Hong Kong in the past 10 years. Tungsten bulbs are illuminated by tungsten filament heat, which consumes 90% of the electricity and only 10% of the electricity is used for lighting.

The Government estimates that the implementation of the plan will save 390 million kWh of electricity per year for users in Hong Kong. It can save nearly 390 million yuan in electricity bills per kilowatt hour, while reducing emissions of 273,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
