Huawei launches Mate 10 to launch a new round of offensive against Apple

Apple is preparing to launch its highly anticipated iPhone X, a flagship smartphone that could mark a significant milestone for the company in the coming years. However, it now faces increasing competition from domestic Chinese tech giant Huawei, which is making strong moves in the Chinese market and beyond. On Monday evening, Huawei unveiled its latest high-end smartphone series, the Mate 10, aiming to solidify its position as China's top smartphone brand and elevate its global image as a premium device manufacturer. Over the past two and a half years, Apple has seen its market share in China gradually eroded by local players like Huawei, which have gained ground with competitive pricing and innovative features. The iPhone X, set to be released next month, is expected to reinvigorate Apple’s presence in China. Meanwhile, Huawei claims that the Mate 10 will excite consumers with features similar to the iPhone X, including a full-screen OLED display and AI-powered functions such as image recognition, but at a more affordable price point. According to research firm Counterpoint, Huawei outperformed Apple in sales during June and July this year, becoming the world's second-largest smartphone manufacturer. However, the firm notes that Huawei may not yet secure the number two spot globally, as Apple could rebound in the second half of the year. Despite this, Huawei’s market share in China has grown from 14% in 2015 to 18% this year, while Apple’s dropped from 14% to 10%. Huawei’s consumer business CEO, Yu Chengdong, said in an interview that the company has evolved from being a "nameless" player to one of the top three in the global market. He emphasized Huawei’s ambition to succeed in the high-end smartphone segment, which remains a key area of profitability. During a press event in Munich, Germany, Huawei announced the Mate 10’s starting price at 699 euros, with the higher-end Mate 10 Pro priced at 799 euros. The prices in China and other markets will be revealed later. In comparison, the iPhone X starts at $999 in the U.S., with a starting price of 8,388 yuan in China. After dominating the telecommunications equipment industry, Huawei expanded into smartphones several years ago, competing with giants like Ericsson and Nokia. Last year, Yu set a goal for Huawei to become the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer within four to five years, though he later downplayed the target, focusing instead on the high-end market. In the high-end smartphone space, dominated by Apple, Huawei has made notable progress. In the first half of 2017, Huawei shipped over 6 million units of its previous flagship model, the P10. According to Canalys, the average selling price of Huawei phones has been rising, with more units priced above $500 contributing to total sales. Although Apple still leads the high-end market in China—holding 61% of the market in the first half of the year compared to Huawei’s 16%—the company faces growing pressure. Reports suggest that the iPhone 8 was underperforming in China and other regions, and the iPhone X may face supply issues due to production constraints. Apple has not commented on these claims. Huawei’s rise has coincided with Apple’s struggles in China, where the latter has slipped to fifth place behind Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo. Analysts say these companies better understand local consumer needs, offering similar technology at lower prices and integrating popular services like WeChat. While Huawei remains a niche player in the U.S. market, where its products are banned for security reasons, the company continues to challenge Apple globally. Recently, Huawei even mocked Apple’s facial recognition feature in a social media video, claiming the Mate 10 is the real smart phone. Huawei highlights artificial intelligence as a major selling point for the Mate 10, which uses its own chip with a neural processing unit designed for tasks like image recognition. The AI can tailor camera settings based on the subject, adjusting lighting for people or landscapes. Counterpoint’s Peter Richardson noted that both Huawei and Apple currently offer similar AI capabilities in their devices. “They are among the few manufacturers that can provide this feature,” he said. As competition intensifies, the battle between Apple and Huawei in the high-end smartphone market is only just beginning.
