Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) is taking a major step forward in automotive electronics with the introduction of its SMART7 power IC technology. Designed specifically for applications such as body control modules and distribution centers, this advanced manufacturing process enables automakers to achieve higher energy efficiency in compact spaces. The SMART7 Power IC manages, diagnoses, and protects various loads, including those used in heating, lighting, air conditioning, and seat/mirror adjustments. It also replaces traditional electromechanical relays and fuses in a more cost-effective and reliable way.
Building on the success of the PROFET+ series, Infineon has launched two new high-side power switch families: PROFET?+2 and High Current PROFET?. The SPOC?+2 multichannel SPI high-side power controller is expected to be available within the next year. Andreas Doll, Vice President and General Manager of Body Power Devices at Infineon Automotive Electronics, highlighted that over the past decade, Infineon has shipped 1 billion PROFET+ switches, and the new PROFET+2 offers enhanced protection, lower power consumption, smaller packaging, and reduced system costs.
The PROFET+2 product line is tailored for 12V automotive lighting and capacitive load applications, such as halogen bulbs, LED lighting, and dimming systems. These devices provide advanced diagnostics and protection while maintaining pin compatibility with previous generations, allowing for seamless migration without changes to the ECU layout. Compared to earlier versions, the PROFET+2 reduces package size by up to 40%, lowers current consumption by 50%, and improves energy efficiency. The smallest model, the BTS7008-2EPA, features an 8 mΩ dual-channel switch with robust protection and diagnostic capabilities.
Meanwhile, the High Current PROFET series extends the flexibility of the PROFET+2 family, offering an on-resistance (RDS(ON)) range from 8 mΩ to 2 mΩ in the same TSDSO-14 package. This compact design, with a pitch of just 0.65 mm, delivers the lowest RDS(ON) for a single-chip switch. The TSDSO-14 package is 50% smaller than the DPAK and 80% smaller than the D2PAK, making it ideal for high-current applications. These switches are efficient in driving heavy loads and can reduce power consumption in control modules by up to 60%. They support a wide range of applications, including glow plug controllers, PTC heaters, starter relays, horns, and auxiliary power outlets.
Both the PROFET+2 and High Current PROFET families are pin-compatible and share core features. Their RDS(ON) ranges from 2 mΩ to 200 mΩ, and they offer exceptional load current sensing accuracy—less than 5% at nominal current. Protection features include overcurrent, overtemperature, overvoltage, load dump, and reverse battery functions. Infineon is the first to implement reverse battery protection in a single chip, and the starting voltage capability works down to 3.1 V, setting a new industry benchmark.
The PROFET+2 device BTS7008-2EPA (2x8 mΩ) is now in mass production, with engineering samples of other models available for delivery. Volume production for the rest of the product lines is scheduled for Q4 2017. All high-side switches comply with AEC Q100 standards, ensuring reliability and performance in automotive environments.
