Too much trouble to see the wireless network? Wi-Fi black/white list ready

Yesterday, a post titled "Win10 wireless old? Reset a second recovery" didn't expect to spark so much discussion. However, it's also true that the popularity of Wi-Fi has made people overlook the importance of wired connections. As Wi-Fi usage grows, so do its issues. If we go back more than a decade ago, we used to talk about different types of cables and RJ45 connectors. Switches were configured with one specific type of connection.

But Wi-Fi also has its downsides. Once connected, your computer tends to remember the network and automatically reconnect. This is especially common in offices or university campuses. You can often find many Wi-Fi networks available on a single workstation.

Sometimes, when the original network drops, your device might switch to another one without you realizing it. The speed might not even improve, yet the connection changes automatically. It's really annoying if you're dealing with sensitive information on an unknown network or using an untrusted Wi-Fi. But if you delete all saved networks, you'll have to re-enter passwords every time you need to connect again.

The best solution is to block unwanted networks and add them back when needed. While there are many third-party tools for this, from a technical perspective, using the command prompt can be just as effective. Here’s how you can do it:

Open Command Prompt as an administrator and enter the following command:

Netsh wlan add filter permission=block ssid="network name" networktype=infrastructure

This will block a specific Wi-Fi network. To unblock it, use this command:

Netsh wlan delete filter permission=block ssid="network name" networktype=infrastructure

To view the current list of blocked (blacklisted) and allowed (whitelisted) networks, run:

Netsh wlan show filters

Whether you want to keep them blocked or unblocked is entirely up to you. This method gives you full control over your Wi-Fi connections and helps avoid unintended network switches. It's a simple but powerful way to manage your wireless environment effectively.
