Apple's new advertisement: HomePod playing music consumes less electricity than LED bulbs

In recent years, Apple has taken numerous steps toward environmental sustainability, and its latest innovations continue to reflect this commitment. The design of the Apple Park headquarters is a prime example, with 70% of its energy coming from solar power. Even the newly launched HomePod smart speaker is no exception to this green initiative. In its latest ad campaign, Apple highlights that the HomePod uses less power to play music than a typical LED light bulb. According to Apple representatives, the HomePod consumes just 5.75 watts when playing music at 50% volume, and 8.74 watts at 115V — which is actually lower than the 9–10W consumed by most LED bulbs. However, power consumption increases as the volume rises. It’s also worth noting that voltage standards vary globally: 115V in the U.S., 230V in the U.K., and 100V in Japan. Inside the HomePod, you’ll find a high-resolution LED display on top, seven speaker arrays, an A8 chip, and six microphone arrays for voice commands. Apple has prioritized low-power components and developed specialized software to optimize energy efficiency. This ensures that the device performs well while using minimal energy. The HomePod is designed to automatically enter a low-power mode after eight minutes of inactivity, consuming only about 1.7 watts during this time. This performance exceeds the ENERGY STAR requirements for audio/video devices, using 50% less power than what is allowed in low-power mode. Additionally, the HomePod comes with a 2-meter power cable that matches the color of the unit — either space gray or white. This means the cord is removable and can be easily replaced by the user, making it more sustainable and easier to maintain. It's also worth noting that the HomePod is now available for pre-order in the U.S., U.K., and Australia, starting February 9th, with a price tag of $349. Initially, it only supports English, but updates later this spring will add support for French and German. As Apple continues to push the boundaries of innovation, it seems clear that sustainability remains a key focus across all its products.
