Apple's new advertisement: HomePod playing music consumes less electricity than LED bulbs

In recent years, Apple has taken numerous steps to promote environmental sustainability. The design of the new Apple Park headquarters is a perfect example, with 70% of its energy coming from solar power. This commitment to green initiatives also extends to Apple's latest product, the HomePod. As shown in Apple’s latest ad, the HomePod uses less power to play music than an LED light bulb, highlighting its energy-efficient design. According to Apple representatives, the HomePod consumes just 5.75 watts when playing music at 50% volume, and 8.74 watts at 115V — which is actually lower than the typical 9-10W of standard LED bulbs. However, the power consumption increases as the volume rises. It’s important to note that voltage levels vary globally: 115V in the U.S., 230V in the UK, and 100V in Japan. The HomePod features a high-resolution LED display on top, seven speaker arrays, and an A8 chip for powerful audio performance. It also includes six microphone arrays for voice command recognition. Apple prioritized low-power components and developed specialized software to optimize energy efficiency, ensuring the device performs well without consuming excessive power. Apple highlighted that the HomePod automatically enters a low-power mode after 8 minutes of inactivity, using only about 1.7 watts during this time. This makes it more energy-efficient than the ENERGY STAR requirements for audio/video devices, using 50% less power in low-power mode. This feature not only helps reduce electricity bills but also supports Apple’s broader environmental goals. Additionally, the HomePod comes with a 2-meter power cord that matches the color of the unit—either space gray or white. The cord is removable, allowing users to replace it if needed, adding to the product’s long-term usability and sustainability. It’s worth noting that the Apple HomePod is now available for pre-order in the U.S., UK, and Australia, starting February 9th, with a price of $349. Currently, it only supports English, but French and German will be added through software updates this spring. This expansion shows Apple’s ongoing effort to make its products more accessible and user-friendly worldwide.
