Microsoft released its fiscal 2016 second-quarter financial results on January 29, as reported by NetEase Technology News. According to the report, under U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), the company's revenue for the quarter came in at $23.8 billion, a 10% decline compared to $26.5 billion in the same period last year. Operating profit fell to $6 billion from $7.8 billion, a drop of 23%, while net income was $5 billion, down from $5.9 billion, reflecting a 15% decrease. The diluted earnings per share were $0.62, down from $0.71, representing a 13% year-over-year decline.
On a non-GAAP basis, Microsoft’s revenue reached $25.7 billion, slightly down from $26.1 billion in the same quarter last year, but up 3% when excluding the impact of currency fluctuations. Operating profit rose to $7.9 billion, an increase of 3% compared to $7.7 billion last year, and up 13% when adjusted for exchange rate changes. Net income grew to $6.3 billion, up 8% from $5.8 billion, and increased by 20% when excluding foreign exchange effects. Diluted earnings per share were $0.78, up 11% from $0.70, with a 23% increase after adjusting for currency impacts.
In the second quarter, Microsoft returned $6.5 billion to shareholders through stock repurchases and dividends. CEO Satya Nadella highlighted that businesses globally are leveraging Microsoft Cloud Services as their digital transformation platform. He also noted that Windows 10 has been widely adopted, with over 200 million devices activated.
Productivity and Business Processes revenue declined by 2% year-over-year (up 5% when excluding currency effects) to $6.7 billion. Key highlights include a 5% growth in Office commercial products and cloud services, with 20.6 million Office 365 consumer subscriptions. Dynamics business revenue rose 11% year-over-year.
Smart Cloud Services revenue increased by 5% year-over-year (up 11% excluding currency effects) to $6.3 billion. Server products and cloud services saw a 10% rise, while Azure revenue surged 140% year-over-year. More than one-third of the world's top 500 companies now use Microsoft's enterprise mobility solutions, marking a threefold increase compared to the previous year.
Personal Computing revenue dropped 5% year-over-year (down 2% excluding currency effects) to $12.7 billion. Windows OEM revenue fell 5%, but Surface sales jumped 29%. Mobile phone revenue declined sharply by 49%, while search advertising revenue grew 21% before traffic costs. Xbox Live monthly active users reached a record 48 million, up 30% year-over-year.
Kevin Turner, Microsoft’s COO, praised the strong holiday performance of Surface and Xbox, noting that the company’s business units are performing well. He emphasized the success of the sales team and partners in helping customers recognize the value of Microsoft’s cloud technologies, including Azure, Office 365, and CRM Online.
