Important Directions for China's Future Development: Intelligent Autonomous Systems and Applications

The 2017 China Intelligent Automation Conference, organized by the Intelligent Automation Professional Committee of the China Automation Association and hosted by Hebei University of Technology, took place in Tianjin from October 28th to 29th. Over 150 experts and scholars from 62 universities and 12 research institutes across the country participated in the event. The conference emphasized that the information age has entered a new era of intelligence, where each technological revolution brings profound social transformations. The current weak artificial intelligence revolution is already underway, with intelligent autonomous systems and applications becoming a key focus for China’s future development. Especially in the last ten years, there has been a surge of enthusiasm and innovation in AI development, creating a very promising environment. According to Wu, "Artificial Intelligence" refers to the ability of humans to recognize, understand, and learn, rather than instinctive behaviors. "Intelligent control" involves integrating human intelligence into control systems, enabling them to mimic human capabilities and tackle complex challenges that traditional control methods struggle with. He stressed that the most fundamental skill in studying intelligent control is understanding and modeling features, which reflects the philosophical principle of practice and contradiction. Feature modeling serves as a mathematical approach to capture these characteristics, making it a core issue in AI and intelligent control research and a true indicator of "intelligence." Throughout the two-day conference, five renowned experts delivered presentations, and 60 participants shared their research through oral reports. Discussions covered various aspects of intelligent automation, including spacecraft control, big data integration, bionic robotic fish modeling, high-motor motion control, flexible structure control, and AI applications. Experts proposed innovative approaches such as "all-coefficient adaptive control theory," which ensures system stability and performance. Other topics included feature modeling, intelligent adaptive control methods, and the design of reduced-order and intelligent controllers, opening new pathways for advancements in spacecraft and industrial control. Additionally, the conference explored introspective control to reduce defects in traditional manufacturing, the study of robotic fish movement patterns to enhance underwater vehicle technologies, and cloud-based heterogeneous robot cluster systems to address challenges in system modeling, resource management, and information fusion. These discussions showcased the growing importance of intelligent automation in both scientific research and practical applications.
