The 2017 China Intelligent Automation Conference, organized by the Intelligent Automation Professional Committee of the China Automation Association and hosted by Hebei University of Technology, took place in Tianjin from October 28 to 29. Over 150 experts and scholars from 62 universities and 12 research institutes across the country participated in the event. The conference highlighted that the information age has entered a new era of intelligence, where each technological revolution brings significant societal changes. The weak artificial intelligence revolution is already underway, with intelligent autonomous systems and applications becoming key areas for China's future development. Perceptual intelligence is gradually evolving toward cognitive intelligence and general-purpose AI.

Wu Hongxin, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, emphasized in his keynote speech that since its inception in 1956, artificial intelligence has made remarkable progress over the past six decades. Especially in the last ten years, there has been a surge of enthusiasm and momentum in AI development, creating a very promising environment.
He explained that "artificial intelligence" refers to the human ability to recognize, understand, and learn, rather than instinctive behavior. "Intelligent control" involves integrating human intelligence into control systems, enabling them to mimic human decision-making and tackle complex challenges that traditional control methods struggle with. Wu stressed that the most fundamental aspect of studying intelligent control is understanding and modeling features—this is both a practical philosophy and a mathematical approach. Feature modeling is not only the core issue in AI and intelligent control research but also the highest expression of "intelligence." Therefore, it is essential to explore how to learn, recognize, and make decisions.
Over the two days of the conference, five renowned experts delivered reports, and 60 participants presented their research. Discussions covered a wide range of topics, including spacecraft intelligent automation, big data-driven intelligent control, bionic robotic fish modeling, high-motor motion control, intelligent control of flexible structures, and AI applications. Experts proposed the use of "all-coefficient adaptive control theory and methods" to ensure system stability and performance, as well as "feature modeling" and "intelligent adaptive control based on feature models" to design reduced-order and intelligent controllers. These approaches have opened new pathways for advancing spacecraft control and industrial applications.
Additionally, the conference explored introspective control to reduce defects in traditional equipment, studied the body wave model of robotic fish movement to enhance underwater vehicle technologies, and addressed key challenges in heterogeneous robot cluster systems within cloud environments. Topics such as difficult system modeling, resource management, information fusion, and comprehensive sensing were discussed, highlighting the ongoing efforts to push the boundaries of intelligent automation.
