Ziguang Zhao Weiguo: The gap between the 5G era and Qualcomm and MediaTek

During the third Internet Conference, Zhao Weiguo, Chairman of Ziguang Group, accepted an exclusive interview with the Beijing News. Zhao Weiguo believes that the development of 5G will bring more applications to the entire communications industry, the Internet, and the Internet of Things, which means more chips are needed. This is a new opportunity for Chinese chip companies to accelerate their approach to international “leaders” companies.

The Beijing News: The development of 5G technology is mature, what does it mean for chip manufacturers? What preparations do you need to make?

Zhao Weiguo: After the development of 5G technology, especially after having standards, it is definitely a new opportunity. Because the development of 5G will bring more applications to the entire communications industry, the Internet, and the Internet of Things, it means more chips are needed. Certainly need a smaller size, faster speed, and then higher requirements for the industry. Violet has been engaged in the research and development of chips in this area. Because the 5G standard has not yet been announced, we must consider all possible standards and then invest a lot of money in research and development.

Beijing News: Qualcomm is a leading company in the 3G and 4G era, and smartphones have achieved Qualcomm. Still hope to catch up with such an international giant?

Zhao Weiguo: Qualcomm was established in 1985. It can be said to be an originator in the field of communications, and has accumulated a large number of patents and intellectual property rights. The total amount of money it makes may be more than all the mobile phone manufacturers in China, and it has a very strong strength.

In the field of mobile chips, we rank third in the world. At present, the world's first market is Qualcomm, the second is MediaTek, and the third is us. We are working hard and hope to come up with the first 5G chip in 2019 and 2020. We will keep pace faster and change faster in the 5G era. I think the gap with them will be smaller.

The Beijing News: Compared with such a "leader", what is the biggest gap between domestic companies?

Zhao Weiguo: From a technical level, I think there is still a big difference between domestic companies and Qualcomm in the field of communication. Just like a car, we can build a car now, or buy a BMW or a Mercedes-Benz, but if you take it apart, there is still no way to make such a car. Technology is a long-term accumulation, and there are many problems that are not entirely patents. What is more important is how.

Beijing News: What are the advantages of Chinese companies in this wave of new wave?

Zhao Weiguo: There are three main advantages. It can be said that there are three depths. First, there is a relatively strong local market that promotes rapid R&D through this market demand. Chinese companies are strong in efficiency and speed, and our response to the market is faster. Second, the depth of talents, we graduate 10 million college students, graduate students, doctoral students each year, there are many science and engineering, there are many are engaged in chips. So even though our talent level is not so high today, the talent base is very large, and many overseas students are willing to come back now. Third, the depth of capital, for the development of an industry, capital is always the most important, if there is no capital, there will be no talent.

The Beijing News: I feel that the pace of internationalization of Chinese technology companies is slow, and where is it hindered?

Zhao Weiguo: In the era of globalization, in fact, enterprises must develop, and in such fields, they must all need the globalization of talents, the globalization of research and development, the globalization of markets, the globalization of capital... This trend is irresistible. of. If a technology company is not a global company, it will not be able to develop. This means that our market competition will be more cruel. You must compete with companies such as Qualcomm and MediaTek.

In fact, in the Internet field, it is difficult for foreign companies to succeed in China because China's language, business environment, and people's habits are different, which is why Chinese Internet companies can develop rapidly.

However, there is no language in the technical field, no national borders, so our competition will be more cruel. The globalization of this kind of technical enterprise in China is very difficult, including Huawei. Although it is already very powerful, it has gone through many years of process. It really takes time.
