18 L4 Baidu unmanned vehicles ignite domestic driverless hope

What is the concept of L4 unmanned technology? According to the division standard published by the US NHTSA, smart cars can be divided into four levels. At present, most of the traditional car companies mainly develop assisted driving technology (L1-L3 level), which is characterized by some automatic functions, but also requires human control. The L4 level is the highest level, no human operation, and it is the ideal unmanned state. Traditional automakers open their interfaces to Baidu. In theory, all auto parts that can be controlled by operation can be replaced by artificial intelligence.

How did the 18 Baidu unmanned vehicles displayed this time realize the automatic obstacle avoidance for turning? The main "contributors" are sensors, radars, and the "Baidu car brain" in the trunk position.

In terms of technical principle, the unmanned vehicle roof is equipped with an uninterrupted 64-line laser radar, and there are three 16-line laser radars on the left and right sides of the roof. During the process of vehicle travel, the laser radar continuously rotates 360 degrees to collect environmental data around the vehicle, and to locate the vehicle itself and detect obstacles around it. Above the roof, you can see two high dynamic range camera modules, which are mainly used to accurately identify traffic lights, road traffic lines, various traffic signs, and obstacles in front.

At the same time, Baidu unmanned vehicles are also equipped with a combination of lightwave radar and GPS/IMU navigation and positioning system for vehicle distance positioning and point cloud positioning detection. All the sensing devices together form the sensing system of the unmanned vehicle. As the nerve center, "Baidu car brain" also contributed. The data collected by various radars and sensors is transmitted to the "Baidu Auto Brain" for calculation and analysis.

At this Internet conference, after the Baidu unmanned vehicle has achieved full human intervention without human intervention, when it can officially launch commercial and mass production problems, it will come back. In June 2016, at the 2016 Summer Davos Forum in Tianjin, Baidu President Zhang Yaqin gave an answer to the media. As the first company in China to cooperate with the government to establish an unmanned vehicle pilot project, Baidu has unique conditions for conducting more sinister environmental tests on automobiles. Unmanned vehicles are Baidu's key projects in the future, and are planned to be mass-produced for five years in commercial use.
