The world's first 5nm chip factory starts mass production in early 2020
On January 26th, in Taiwan's southern science industrial park (STSP), the first phase of the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Fab 18 fab was successfully laid. This is TSMC’s fourth 300mm wafer fab in Taiwan and will also begin production of a new 5nm process for the first time. TSMC plans to complete the construction of the new plant in the first quarter of 2019 and begin the equipment relocation. It will try out production in the second quarter of 2019 and will begin production at 5nm in early 2020.
The second phase of Fab 18 will start in the third quarter of this year, and it will be put into mass production in 2020. The third phase of the project will be planned for construction in the third quarter of 2019 and volume production in 2021.
TSMC said that after the Phase III project is fully operational, Fab 18 will have an annual capacity of 1 million 300mm wafers.
TSMC chairman Zhang Zhongmou, who will retire in June of this year, participated in this important opening ceremony for the last time. He said: "Fab 18 represents three important commitments of TSMC: its commitment to future development, its commitment to continuously promote technological progress, and its commitment to Taiwan. The 5nm technology investment is expected to be NT$700 billion (approximately RMB 1520 million). The investment for Fab 18 will exceed NT$500 billion (approximately RMB100.8 billion).â€
TSMC currently has more than 10,000 employees in STSP, and Fab 18 can provide more than 14,000 jobs after it is completed.
TSMC's 5nm FinFET process is optimized for both high-performance computing and mobile applications. For the first time, EUV EUV lithography has been introduced to reduce the complexity of multiple exposures and to reduce the chip area.
TSMC also reiterated that the 3nm plant will also be located in Taiwan's local STSP and will not travel to the United States.
According to Zhang Zhongmou's previous statement, TSMC will start construction of a 3nm plant in 2020.
