On October 17, the Cainiao Network, a logistics arm of Alibaba, unveiled its flagship robot warehouse in Huiyang, Guangdong Province. This state-of-the-art facility is capable of handling over one million packages per day, showcasing the company's commitment to automation and efficiency. As the "Double 11" shopping festival approaches, Cainiao plans to launch robotic warehouses across key regions such as Shanghai, Tianjin, Zhejiang, Hubei, and more. These facilities will be equipped with automated assembly lines, AGV robots, and robotic arms, all powered by advanced algorithms to streamline operations and support large-scale logistics applications.
Last year, Cainiao introduced a super robot warehouse in Jiaxing and Haining, which has since been upgraded ahead of this year’s "Double 11." The Jiaxing facility now features a fully automated production system, while the Hangzhou and Fengxian warehouses are also undergoing upgrades to enhance delivery speed in the Yangtze River Delta region. With logistics orders expected to surge significantly during the "Double 11" period, the need for smart logistics solutions has never been greater. Human labor alone cannot keep up with the demand, making automation essential.
This year’s "Double 11" logistics will see a shift from isolated robotic warehouses to widespread deployment. While many companies are experimenting with smart and unmanned warehouses, most are still in early testing phases. Cainiao, however, has taken a leading role, operating the world’s largest network of robot warehouses in real-world operations. Meanwhile, JD Logistics has also made significant strides, launching its first full-process unmanned warehouse in Shanghai, covering 40,000 square meters. Equipped with six-axis robotic arms and advanced sorting systems, the facility handles receiving, storage, picking, and packing with high precision.
Cainiao has partnered with several tech firms, including Collar Technology and Fast Warehouse, to upgrade the Huiyang warehouse. According to Cainiao experts, the Huiyang facility was built autonomously by robots after being trained through deep learning. With just basic infrastructure in place, the robots can complete the entire construction process. Looking back, in 2016, "intelligent logistics" was a key focus for fundraising, and today, with leaders like Cainiao and JD Logistics driving innovation, the industry is witnessing major breakthroughs.
Other players, such as YTO Express, have also announced plans to introduce automated systems in their Shanghai transit center. In April, YTO raised 4.517 billion yuan to invest in intelligent warehouses and logistics integration. Meanwhile, SF Express has established a drone demonstration base in Ganzhou, Jiangxi, and is focusing on using drones in logistics hubs rather than the last-mile delivery. With drones capable of flying over 100 kilometers and carrying heavy loads, SF Express aims to improve service in remote areas, increasing coverage in counties and townships.
As the logistics sector continues to evolve, automation and AI are becoming central to meeting the demands of e-commerce growth. The race for smarter, faster, and more efficient delivery systems is accelerating, with companies investing heavily in technology to stay ahead in the market.
