HTC’s New Standalone VR Headset is Officially Named – VIVE FOCUS!

At ChinaJoy, HTC showcased a standalone VR headset that runs independently. Recently, foreign media uncovered two documents titled “VIVE FOCUS,” confirming the name of the new device. This all-in-one VR headset will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 chip, offering 6DOF tracking and a 3DOF motion controller, similar to Google Daydream.

The VIVE FOCUS will also run on Google’s Daydream platform, giving users access to a wide range of existing content. However, it stands out with its WorldSense technology, which enables position tracking without any external sensors. The exact price is still unknown, but expectations are high.

Dell MR Hybrid Reality Headset Goes Live for Pre-Order

This year, Microsoft introduced several mixed reality headsets. Now, Dell has launched its own version called Visor, which is now available for pre-order. The standalone model costs $350 (about RMB 2,287), while the bundle with a controller is $450 (around RMB 2,948). Visor features a 1440 x 1440 resolution per eye, dual 2.89-inch LCD panels, a 110-degree field of view, and a 90Hz refresh rate. It will officially launch in October and can be purchased through Microsoft Store and Dell.

Google Chrome Team Announces WebVR Overhaul

For those who want to experience VR without expensive hardware, WebVR remains a popular topic. Earlier this year, Google released a stable browser supporting WebVR for Daydream devices. Although not widely adopted, it showed that the API was actively being developed.

Recently, the Google Chrome team held an AMA on Reddit and revealed that WebVR is undergoing a major rewrite. A new, more developer-friendly API is being introduced, supporting a wider range of devices and improving performance.

Microsoft Introduces VR Compatibility Checker Tool

As more people want to try VR, many are unsure if their PC meets the requirements. Microsoft has launched the Windows MR PC Check tool, allowing users to quickly assess whether their system is suitable for VR experiences.

The tool is available on the Windows Store and scans your computer’s hardware, including CPU, GPU, and USB ports, to determine if it meets VR standards.

Unity CEO Predicts VR Prices Will Drop in Two Years

Recently, several VR headsets like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive saw price cuts. Despite this, VR devices remain expensive and require powerful PCs, making them less accessible. However, Unity CEO John Riccitiello is optimistic about the future of VR.

In an interview, he predicted that price issues would be resolved by 2018–2019. He also expressed strong confidence in AR, citing Apple’s ARKit and Google’s ARCore as key drivers for the technology’s growth.

Nintendo Still Not Ready for VR

At a recent summit, Nintendo’s US Operations Director mentioned that the company has been exploring VR for years but hasn’t seen enough fun content to justify entering the market. As a result, they have no plans to release VR content anytime soon.

Nintendo is cautious, aiming for long-term immersive gaming that can be shared with friends and family. But so far, VR hasn’t met their vision.

Try the VR Version of CS:GO?

Counter-Strike is a beloved franchise among gamers. The official sequel, CS:GO, has just opened its beta. While playing on a monitor is great, what if you could step into the game itself? Try the VR version now.

"Pavlov VR" is a first-person shooter designed specifically for VR. It includes five maps from CS:GO, recreating the game in a highly realistic way. If you're a fan of CS and want a new way to play, "Pavlov VR" is definitely worth trying.

Can Your iPhone Be Used as an AR Controller?

With Apple’s ARKit platform, there have been many creative AR apps. Now, a studio called Emergent combined HoloLens with an iPhone, turning the phone into a motion-tracking controller with 6DOF capabilities.

While the demo had some lag and accuracy issues, it shows the potential of mobile devices in AR and VR. As tracking improves, phones may become even more versatile in the future.

That’s it for this week’s VR news! If you have any thoughts or ideas, feel free to share below. ■
