At the start of this year's conference, LG unveiled its brand-new artificial intelligence platform, ThinQ AI, during CES 2018. The company showcased a comprehensive range of AI-powered home appliances, including smart wardrobes, refrigerators, washing machines, and the newly launched 2018 OLED TV series. These products highlighted LG's commitment to integrating AI into everyday life.
Interestingly, this wasn't entirely new news. Earlier last month, reports from Lei Feng Network indicated that LG had already officially launched the ThinQ brand, aiming to unify all its AI-related products under one umbrella. The CES event was seen as a strategic move to further promote the brand and its vision for the future of smart living.
LG emphasized three key features of ThinQ products: first, smart learning capabilities—such as air conditioners that adjust temperature automatically or robots with visual recognition. Second, AI integration across various scenarios, from home to travel and office. Third, openness, allowing compatibility with other platforms like Google Assistant, which was integrated into LG’s OLED TVs.
Looking ahead, it’s clear that ThinQ will become the core identity of LG’s smart devices. To support this vision, LG has also established an investment fund dedicated to AI projects.
During the press conference, LG demonstrated how different smart devices can work together. For instance, a voice-activated robot named CLOi was supposed to check the user’s schedule and monitor the washing machine’s status. However, during the live demo, CLOi failed to respond, which raised some questions about its reliability.
Another example was the InstaView smart refrigerator, which uses a transparent display to show what’s inside. With voice control, it could suggest recipes based on available ingredients. Unfortunately, CLOi still didn’t react, highlighting inconsistencies in the system.
Many of these products were previously announced, but after months of buildup, LG finally revealed its 20K 4K TV series, featuring both OLED and LCD models. This was an upgraded version of last year’s lineup, with notable improvements such as built-in AI voice assistants and dynamic HDR technology.
The new TV series is powered by the advanced Alpha 9 processor, which enhances AI performance, delivers superior image quality, and supports up to 120FPS frame rates. Additionally, LG showcased a TV model integrated with Google Assistant, enabling users to control the TV through voice commands, search for content, identify people in photos, access news, or view personal photos from their Google accounts.
What’s more, home appliances can be controlled via the TV’s voice system. In this case, Google Assistant performed well, responding accurately. It’s intriguing that while CLOi, another AI assistant, was part of the same ecosystem, it didn’t function as expected. This discrepancy raises questions about the different AI systems used within LG’s smart product lineup.
