In the early morning of this year, during the CES 2018 conference, LG unveiled its brand-new artificial intelligence brand, ThinQ AI. The company showcased a comprehensive range of AI-powered home products, including smart wardrobes, refrigerators, washing machines, and the newly launched 2018 OLED TV system. These innovations signaled LG's strong commitment to integrating AI into everyday life.
Interestingly, reports from last month had already hinted at LG’s plans to launch the ThinQ brand, aiming to unify all AI-related products under one umbrella. The CES event was seen as a strategic move to introduce these advancements to a broader audience.
According to LG, ThinQ products are designed with three key features in mind. First, they offer smart learning capabilities—such as air conditioners that automatically adjust temperature or robots equipped with visual recognition. Second, AI is deeply integrated into various aspects of life, including home, travel, and office environments. Lastly, the platform is open, allowing compatibility with other systems like Google Assistant, which was successfully integrated into LG’s OLED TVs.
Looking ahead, it’s clear that the ThinQ brand will play a central role in LG’s future smart product lineup. To further support this vision, LG has also established an investment fund focused on AI development and innovation.
During the press conference, LG demonstrated how different smart devices can work together. For instance, CLOi, a voice-activated robot, was supposed to check the user's schedule and monitor the washing machine’s status. However, during the live demo, it failed to respond, raising questions about its reliability. Another example was the InstaView smart refrigerator, which could display the contents inside and suggest recipes via voice control. Unfortunately, CLOi didn’t react as expected in this scenario either.
Many of these products had been previously announced, but the buildup at CES made the official launch feel more significant. LG finally revealed its new 20K 4K TV series, which included both OLED and LCD models. This lineup was an upgrade from the previous year, featuring an integrated AI voice assistant and dynamic HDR technology.
On the hardware side, the new TVs are powered by LG’s advanced Alpha 9 processor, enhancing AI performance and delivering superior image quality, along with a smooth 120FPS frame rate.
LG also demonstrated a TV equipped with Google Assistant, enabling users to control the TV directly through voice commands. They could search for content, identify people in photos, view news, or browse their Google account. Additionally, home appliances could be controlled through the TV’s voice system. In contrast to the earlier issues with CLOi, Google Assistant performed flawlessly during the demonstration.
It remains unclear why CLOi struggled with voice recognition while Google Assistant worked well. Both were part of the same ecosystem, making the discrepancy intriguing. As LG continues to expand its AI-driven product line, the success of ThinQ will likely depend on improving the reliability and integration of its voice assistants.
