Dutch researchers expect soft OLEDs made of ceramic PCBs to open a new door for display applications

Researchers at HolstCentre manufacture on ceramic PCBs that are only about 20-40 μm thick. Compared to metal foils or soft glass, soft ceramic PCBs have always been considered easier to handle, and inherently have moisture resistance and high temperature performance up to 1000 °C.

According to the researchers' testing on 120x25mm OLED prototypes, only one layer of a thin film package directly deposited on the top by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition and several layers of printing by HolstCentre enables ceramic-based PCB-based OLEDs to be implemented below each The water vapor transmission rate is about 8.5x10^7g/m^2.
Compared to the minimum requirement for general commercial devices, which is approximately 10^-6g/m^2 WVTR per day, HolstCentre's experimental data is more competitive. If it is really possible to achieve such a level, it is expected that the display using such a flexible OLED can withstand about 10 years, so that the occurrence of dark spots that are visible to the naked eye due to moisture, and thus deterioration.
“It is not easy to achieve such a WVTR, and there are many soft OLEDs with only a single-sided protection layer that can only reach about 10^-5g/m^2 per day, which is equivalent to only maintaining one year or less. Lifetime, said Hylke Akkerman, senior scientist at HolstCentre.
