Texas Instruments (TI) has recently launched a compact low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) serializer and deserializer (SerDes) in a 5x5mm QFN package. This innovative solution is reported to be smaller than one-third the size of competing products, making it an ideal choice for space-constrained applications such as wireless base stations, data communication backplanes, industrial systems, video processing, and in-vehicle infotainment systems.
The SN65LV1023A serializer and SN65LV1224B deserializer utilize a 10-bit SerDes chipset that enables high-speed serial data transmission and reception at clock rates equivalent to parallel word speeds—ranging from 10MHz to 66MHz over an LVDS differential backplane. This translates into a throughput range of 100 Mbps to 660 Mbps, offering flexibility for various high-performance applications.
At its maximum operating frequency of 66MHz, the chipset consumes less than 450mW, which is remarkably efficient for such performance levels. It features fast-lock synchronous mode with a lock indicator, eliminating the need for external components in the phase-locked loop (PLL). This makes the design more streamlined and reliable, especially in industrial environments ranging from -40°C to +85°C. Additionally, the chip includes programmable edge flip-flops and a straight-through pinout configuration, simplifying PCB layout and improving signal integrity.
Both the SN65LV1023A and SN65LV1224B are now available for purchase through TI and its authorized distributors. They come in a 5x5mm, 32-pin leadless quad flat pack (QFN) package, and also in a 28-pin Small Outline Package (SSOP) variant for different design needs. For orders of 1,000 units, the suggested unit price is $4.60, making this a cost-effective option for high-volume production. With its compact size, low power consumption, and high performance, this SerDes solution is well-suited for next-generation system designs across multiple industries.
