Editor's Note: Maxim's constant current LED drivers, the MAX6971/MAX6983 (16 ports) and the MAX6970/MAX6980/MAX6981 (8 ports), feature a 25MHz, 4-wire, industry standard SPI-compatible serial interface. The 16 or 8 channel open drain, constant current sink LED driver output is rated at 36V. A single external resistor is used to set the output current. The current between the outputs is matched to 2%, and the current matching between the devices is 6%. Each port can provide up to 55mA of sink current for all LEDs. The devices operate from a 3V to 5.5V supply and operate over the -40°C to +125°C temperature range. All devices support standard lighting and signage applications. The 16-port driver MAX6971/MAX6983 uses an industry-standard shift register plus latch form serial interface. The driver receives data through data input DIN and clock input CLK and shifts into the 16-bit shift register. After 16 clock cycles, the input data appears at the DOUT output. This mode of operation allows multiple devices to be cascaded. The latch enable input LE loads the 16-bit data of the shift register into the 16-bit output latch to determine the switch for the particular LED. Output Enable / OE Controls all 16-output switches with fast response characteristics suitable as PWM inputs for LED brightness control. Some lighting or signaling applications require LED fault detection and fail-safe features, and the 16-port MAX6983 and 8-port MAX6980 provide these features. The LED fault detection function reports an open LED fault in the data stream. If the serial interface fails for more than 1 second, the watchdog timer automatically clears the screen. Fault detection and watchdog functions eliminate complex external protection circuitry, speeding up the design process and reducing the cost of traffic and marquee instructions, gaming consoles and architectural lighting systems. As an 8-port LED driver, the MAX6970 provides LED driver functionality in the form of a standard register plus latch. The MAX6981 also adds LED open-circuit fault detection. The 16-port MAX6971/MAX6983 are available in 24-pin TSSOP and 24-pin narrow PDIP packages, while the 8-port MAX6970/MAX6980/MAX6981 are available in 16-pin TSSOP and PDIP packages. The 16-port MAX6971 and MAX6083 are priced at $1.98 and $2.14, respectively. The MAX6970 is priced at $0.99, the MAX6981 is priced at $1.03, and the MAX6980 is priced at $1.11.
