Tongfang Optoelectronics Liu Gang: LED technology focuses on chips

On June 9th, 2010, the 15th Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition was held in Guangzhou Pazhou Convention and Exhibition Center. At the exhibition site, the reporter interviewed some enterprises participating in the exhibition.

Reporter: Excuse me, Mr. Liu, do you think that the gap between Chinese-made chips and the international market is big?

Mr. Liu: In the industry, before, everyone thought that the gap with the international is relatively large, but now it seems that with the increase of the ability of technicians and the improvement of autonomy, chip technology has gradually matured, and the gap is getting smaller and smaller.

Reporter: How do you view the LED industry patents? Please briefly introduce the patented products of Tongfang Company.

Mr. Liu: There are many patent problems in the technology of epitaxial wafers, chips, and packages. Some companies refer to their own patents, which are basically product edge technologies, not core technologies. Tongfang Optoelectronics has key technologies and original patents for vertical structure substrate stripping, conductive and thermally conductive new substrate bonding, chip separation, and surface roughening in LED. At the same time, it cooperated with Lemnis of the Netherlands to solve the patent problem in the European and American markets.

Many companies are now developing vertical structure chips, which shows that the advantages of vertical structure chips are very large. This is mainly reflected in the fact that the vertical structure chip has better heat dissipation and can withstand large current, which is very suitable for high power. In this regard, Tongfang has a research and development team of nearly 30 people in Singapore, and also built a vertical structure chip production base in Beijing, with a monthly capacity of 10kk high-power chips. At the same time, it plans to invest 1.6 billion yuan in Beijing to develop and build a relatively complete high-brightness LED epitaxial wafer, chip manufacturing key technology and production base. At present, Tongfang's production bases in LED-related fields include Shenyang, Guangzhou, Nantong and Shenzhen. Covering a wide area.

In terms of LED epitaxy and chip fabrication, extension is art, and chip is technology. In the future, LED lighting manufacturers will be the core part of the competition - the chip.

Reporter: The traditional incandescent lamp will be relatively troublesome in terms of using the power supply. Can it be explained from the side that the application of LED lighting in the civilian market is getting closer and closer?

Mr. Liu: The first demonstration application in China is in the area of ​​street lamps. In the European market, the use of incandescent lamps has been completely banned. The application of LED in civilian applications should not only consider the price factor, but also consider the comprehensive factors such as energy consumption and service life. In China, there is still a long way to go to the full spread of LED energy-saving lamps. There are no specific policy requirements for China to fully popularize LED energy-saving lamps.

In Japan, the recycling work of energy-saving lamps (CFL) and batteries is very good. They are fully cherishing and using resources. However, this aspect of our country is not in place.

Reporter: What is the current LED industry standard in China?

Mr. Liu: Now that the Chinese LED industry standard has just been promulgated, it needs further improvement. However, it is obviously not scientific to standardize LED products with the standards of traditional light sources and lamps. Need to break the traditional concept.

Reporter: In the face of the current hot LED market, more and more enterprises are producing LED lighting. Will there be any excess of LED products in the future, and the phenomenon of oversupply?

General Liu: Very likely. There may be a big storm after 2-3 years. Some companies stand up and some companies fall down, and there will be a reshuffle in the industry.

Reporter: During this period, will the LED market waste a lot of resources?

Mr. Liu: Enterprises that make terminal products such as light sources or lamps are investing less. Unlike core manufacturing companies that do extensions and chips, they will require very high investment. So now it is said that a lot of resources are wasted.

Reporter: At that time, the LED market will mature, and large companies will be reshuffled. Should small be eliminated?

Mr. Liu: Small businesses may not be eliminated, they will occupy a certain position in the low-end market. At the same time, this industry chain is very large, and it will definitely form an OEM/ODM approach. The operating costs of small businesses are low.

Reporter: Please tell us about the sales strategy of Tongfang Optoelectronics.

Mr. Liu: At present, the sales model of Tongfang Semiconductor and Lighting is being integrated. But there are two points that can be affirmed. We will vigorously promote it in China, explore suitable models, find powerful partners, and strive to open up markets in the international arena. International sales are not expected to be too low. At the same time, the sales model of Tongfang Semiconductor and Lighting will also draw on the sales model of other companies in Tongfang, making full use of the overall sales resources of Tongfang and making profits together.

Reporter: Is the same LED backlighting module produced by Tongfang Company?

Mr. Liu: Yes, they are all produced by themselves.

Reporter: Some companies have exhibited a lighting product for OLED application technology at the Frankfurt exhibition. What do Liu think?

Mr. Liu: OLED and LED are two different products. OLED is a new display technology, and is still in the research and development stage, and some applications are also seen in the market.

Reporter: How is the impact of industry regulations on the middle and lower reaches of the LED industry?

Mr. Liu: Government promotion is a very good thing. However, because the products produced by enterprises are similar, the technical threshold is relatively low, and the cost is similar. Some problems have arisen in the demonstration application. There are two main reasons for this: First, the traditional concept has not changed; second, the existing technology, product quality, and service life have not yet matured. This industry will take some time to develop and mature. Only when the industry develops more mature, technology and product quality improve, LED applications will get better and better.

Reporter: The exhibition has already celebrated its 15th anniversary. What do you think of this exhibition?

Mr. Liu: I have participated in the Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition four times. When I first participated in the year of 2003, I realized that the original Tongfang shares were also illuminated. At that time, Tongfang had done a very wide range of projects in the field of landscape lighting, and its popularity was also very high. Last year and this year's exhibition was to show the society the comprehensive strength and complete industrial chain of Tongfang's shares in the LED industry.
