The general principle of base station positioning is: when the mobile phone is turned on, the mobile phone searches for signals from different communication base stations near the location to obtain the TOA (TIme of Arrival, time of arrival) or TDOA (TIme Difference of Arrivalm, arrival time difference) from the mobile phone to different communication base stations According to the measurement result and the latitude and longitude coordinates of the base station, a triangulation algorithm is generally used to calculate the location of the mobile phone. The actual position estimation algorithm needs to consider the positioning of multiple base stations (3 or more), so the algorithm is much more complicated. Generally speaking, the more base stations the mobile phone searches for, the higher the measurement accuracy and the higher the positioning performance.
Similarly, if the mobile phone has Wi-Fi Internet access enabled, and the latitude and longitude position of the Wi-Fi hotspot is known, the location of the mobile phone can also be calculated. When we turn off the GPS, or in the room (GPS does not work), we can still use some mobile map software to locate, this is the principle. However, due to technical differences, the accuracy of positioning via base stations and Wi-Fi is worse than that of GPS.
