Tesla's plan also makes it a competitor of companies such as Apple and IBM, whose small devices also require lithium-ion batteries. To solve the supply chain challenge, Tesla learned from Ford founder Henry Ford to vertically integrate the supply chain.

To meet the demand for metal materials procurement, Tesla hired supply chain experts to help it reach an agreement with small global mine owners. Tesla has reached an agreement with companies such as PureEnergy Metals and Bancanora Metals.

According to market research firm Macquarie Research, due to the deficit of 4,500 tons this year, the entire lithium supply will be quite tight in 2016, and the supply and marketing balance will gradually reach the next year. However, the tight supply easing is only temporary, and the high demand in the late years of 2010 will lead to a shortage of 46,000 tons of lithium in 2021.

Nickel supply may be a bigger problem. Despite being referred to as a "lithium-ion battery," lithium accounts for only about 2% of the mass of a lithium-ion battery, and nickel has a higher proportion of lithium-ion battery costs. At an investor conference call in late May, Tesla CEO Elon Musk even said that the price of nickel determines the cost of lithium-ion batteries. Before the slowdown in China's economic growth in 2014, the price of nickel was $21,000 per ton. Since then, nickel prices have fallen, but by the end of the 2010s, the supply of nickel will be turned from a current oversupply to a short supply, which will bring new problems to Musk and Tesla. Tesla is preparing for future battery demand, and other companies are not idle.

Most companies will be trapped in the face of Tesla's problems. Most companies have small demand and weak sales, while Tesla has the opposite problem.
