You should know these common sense before buying TV.

A few years ago, 4K and UHD (Ultra HD) were avant-garde words for most consumers. Now they have become the new TV standard. As long as the TV you want to buy is 40 inches or more, you can hardly leave these two keywords. So, is the higher the resolution, the better? Is a TV with more advanced technology worth buying? Let us explore these issues below.

What is the difference between 4K and UHD?

In consumer products, they are no different and almost interchangeable. But from the perspective of professional fields such as video and film production, 4K on consumer products is not really 4K.

In the professional field, 4K refers to the digital image standard of 4096 x 2160 pixel resolution, 4096 is long, 2160 is wide, and the ratio is 1.85:1. From the figures we can see why it is called 4K, and its length and width are twice that of 2K (2048 x 1080).

The screen ratio of consumer TV is generally 16:9 or 1.78:1, its length is not as standard as 4K, the final resolution is 3840 x 2160 pixels, and the length and width are 1080p (also known as Full HD, 1920 x Doubled by 1080 pixels). Therefore, many merchants claim that the resolution of 4K TV is four times that of 1080p, which is used as a selling point.

In 2013, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), now known as the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), decided to end this confusion, calling 4K and UHD collectively UHD (also collectively referred to as UHD). However, the concept of 4K has been deeply rooted in the hearts of the people, which has caused a lot of trouble for the unified name. In addition, some manufacturers (such as Sony) insist on using the 4K formulation.

Is it necessary to buy UHD TV?

Cooking at home is good enough, why go to the restaurant every day? In the choice of TV is also a truth, in 2009 the United States officially stopped the analog signal broadcast, 1080p digital signal has not been replaced for the time being. Of course, if you want one step in place, UHD TV is a better choice.

To put it simply, if you are satisfied with the 1080p TV in your home, there is no need to replace it; if you are going to buy a new TV, it is best to buy a UHD TV.

What are the advantages of UHD TV?

Compared to HDTV, the most obvious and intuitive upgrade for UHD TVs is high pixels. In the same area, 1080p TV can only hold 2 million pixels, while UHD TV can hold 800 pixels. Obviously this is a huge improvement, especially when watching local 4K content, because the pixels in the same area become four times, so the details of the image are more abundant.

Although in order to see more details of the picture, the user needs to sit close to the TV. But don't forget, in addition to the large screen, UHD TV has a better color gamut, better color depth, and some models also support HDR.

Some people say that UHD resolution does not have much effect on screens below 55 inches and traditional viewing distances. In the actual test, we put 1080p TV and UHD TV together, the former plays 1080p Blu-ray video, the latter plays the UHD version of the same movie, the viewing distance is the daily distance. The results show that there is a big gap between the two playback effects.
