LG Display will invest more than 2.8 billion US dollars to develop large-size OLED panels

[High-tech LED News] Foreign media reported that South Korea's LG Display is planning to invest 220 billion yen (about 2.83 billion US dollars), starting mass production of OLED panels in the second half of 2014.

LG Display president Quan Yingxiu said that LG Display will use 8.5 generation glass substrates and 220x250 cm to manufacture OLED panels. Before mass production, LG Display will produce OLED panels in small quantities for use by LG Electronics in 55-inch TVs. LG Electronics plans to sell 300,000 55-inch new OLED TVs every month starting in the second half of 2012.

LG Display said it will assess sales and costs before deciding whether to make large-scale investments. Once the mass production is decided, LG Electronics will expand its OLED TV product line and launch a 40-inch flat-panel TV.

In addition, Samsung is currently actively researching OLED technology, and Japanese manufacturers are lagging behind in this regard. Sony launched its 11-inch OLED TV prototype in 2007, but Sony has stopped producing such products in Japan. Toshiba, Hitachi, Panasonic and Sharp are still in the basic research stage in this field.
