6-Channel Logic/SPI/I2CμModule Isolator Provides Over 100mA Current Through Two Adjustable Power Rails

Milpitas, CA – December 12, 2016 – Linear Technology CorporaTIon introduces the LTM2887, a 6-channel SPI/digital or I2C μModule® isolator for low voltage components. Includes newer DSPs and microprocessors. Two well-regulated adjustable power rails (up to 5V) provide more than 100mA of load current across the isolation barrier and have efficiencies as high as 62%. For auxiliary supplies, the voltage can be adjusted down to 0.6V, while for the SPI interface, the isolated logic supply can be as low as 1.8V. Each power supply provides a precise current limit adjustment pin and an external resistor can be used to regulate the voltage.

In industrial system applications, the ground potential can vary over a wide range, often exceeding the allowable range, which can disrupt communication or even destroy components. The LTM2887 disconnects the ground loop by electrically isolating the logic level interface on each side of an internal isolation barrier. This inductive coupling barrier can withstand very large ground differential voltages up to 2,500VRMS.

A low EMI isolated DC/DC converter is responsible for powering the LTM2887 and providing isolated power to the communication interface and output rail. A separate logic supply pin can be directly connected to a low-voltage microcontroller as low as 1.62V, while an ON pin allows the LTM2887 to shut down and use less than 10μA. The LTM2887 provides uninterrupted communication with common-mode transients >30kV/μs and robust ±10kV ESD (HBM) protection across the isolation barrier.

The LTM2887 is available in two communication interface versions. The LTM2887-I is I2C compliant (up to 400kHz) with bidirectional serial data (SDA) and clock (SCL) and three additional isolated CMOS logic signals operating at up to 10MHz. The LTM2887-S is SPI-compatible and offers a total of six CMOS digital isolated communication channels. All channels operate at up to 10MHz and include three forward signals (CS, SCK, and SDI) and three reverse signals (SDO, DO1, and DO2). When configured for SPI communication, the maximum clock frequency for one-way communication is 8MHz, and 4MHz for round-trip bidirectional operation.

Available in a 3.3V or 5V version, the LTM2887 is available in a 15mm x 11.25mm surface mount BGA package. All integrated circuits and passive components are included in this RoHS compliant μModule package. Available in commercial, industrial and automotive temperature grades, the LTM2887 supports 0°C to 70°C, –40°C to 85°C and –40°C to 105°C operating temperature ranges.
