LED driver with SEPIC controller

High-efficiency, 8-channel, constant-current linear LED driver with switch-mode controller with ±3% current matching for each branch; parallel output for parallel, up to 55mA LED drive.

The MAX16807/MAX16808 are integrated, high-efficiency white or RGB LED drivers. These devices are designed for LCD backlighting or other LED lighting applications with multiple LED strings. The current mode PWM controller of the MAX16807/MAX16808 adjusts the voltage required by the LED array. Depending on the input voltage and LED voltage range, the device can be in a boost or boost-buck (SEPIC) topology. The MAX16807/MAX16808 feature an input voltage range of 8V to 26.5V. The wide frequency adjustment range (20kHz to 1MHz) allows the design to be optimized by tradeoffs between efficiency and board space.

The MAX16807/MAX16808 LED drivers include eight open-drain, constant current-sinking LED driver outputs rated for a continuous operating voltage of 36V. The LED current control circuit can achieve a current matching accuracy of ±3% between LED strings, enabling LEDs with currents higher than 55mA to operate in parallel. The output enable pin can be used for PWM dimming of all output channels simultaneously. The dimming frequency range is 50Hz to 30kHz and the dimming ratio is up to 5000:1. The constant current output is programmed by a single resistor and the LED current of each output channel can be adjusted up to 55mA.

The MAX16807/MAX16808 can operate in stand-alone mode or can be controlled by a microcontroller (μC) through an industry-standard 4-wire serial interface. The MAX16808 includes circuitry to automatically detect open LEDs.

The MAX16807/MAX16808 feature overtemperature protection for the extended -40°C to +125°C temperature range and are available in thermally enhanced, 28-pin TSSOP packages with exposed paddles.
